Overview

Allergic rhinitis is an overreaction of the nasal lining to airborne triggers such as dust, pollen or pets. It's often mistaken for chronic colds — accurate diagnosis leads to long-term relief instead of endless short-term fixes.

Symptoms

Frequent sneezing, especially in the morning
Itchy nose, eyes, ears or throat
Clear runny nose and nasal blockage
Reduced smell and mouth-breathing
Sinus headaches and fatigue

Causes

  • Dust mites, pet dander, mould and pollen
  • Air pollution and smoke
  • Genetic predisposition to allergy

Diagnosis

  • History and nasal endoscopy
  • Skin prick or blood-based allergy testing
  • Assessment for coexisting sinusitis or asthma

Treatment

  • Trigger identification and environmental control
  • Nasal steroid sprays and antihistamines
  • Immunotherapy for long-term desensitisation
  • Treatment of coexisting sinus and eye symptoms

Prevention

  • Wash bedding weekly in hot water
  • Reduce indoor dust and mould
  • Keep windows closed on high pollen days
  • Rinse nose with saline after outdoor exposure

Recovery

Most patients notice clear improvement within 2–4 weeks of a structured plan. Immunotherapy shows lasting benefit over months.
