Overview

Ear infections are one of the most common ENT problems in children and can also affect adults, especially after colds, swimming or travel. Prompt treatment prevents complications like hearing loss and eardrum damage.

Symptoms

Ear pain, sometimes severe and throbbing
Fluid or pus discharge from the ear
Hearing muffled or reduced
Fever, irritability and disturbed sleep in children
A blocked or full sensation in the ear

Causes

  • Upper respiratory infections and colds
  • Blocked eustachian tubes
  • Water exposure (swimmer's ear)
  • Eardrum perforation or chronic middle-ear disease

Diagnosis

  • Detailed history and microscopic ear examination
  • Tympanometry to evaluate middle-ear function
  • Culture of ear discharge when needed
  • Audiometry to check for hearing impact

Treatment

  • Targeted ear drops for outer-ear infections
  • Oral antibiotics when bacterial infection is confirmed
  • Aural toilet under microscope for chronic cases
  • Tympanoplasty or ventilation tubes when indicated

Prevention

  • Keep water out of ears during infections
  • Treat colds and allergies promptly
  • Avoid inserting objects into the ear canal
  • Follow up regularly if you have chronic middle-ear disease

Recovery

Acute cases usually resolve within 5–10 days. Chronic ears require staged treatment and follow-up, often over 6–8 weeks, with clear milestones at every visit.
